Night vigil on Saturday -
Thursday, 21 June 2007

Environmental NGOs are holding a night vigil at Calypso’s Cave in Xaghra, Gozo, on Saturday 23 June at 2100hrs, to launch the protest against the building of villas at Ramla l-Hamra.

The environmentalists’ protest will continue with a national protest march in Valletta, on Monday 25 June, at 1830hrs.

“The peaceful manifestation is intended to highlight how the proposed development will destroy once and for all the quasi-pristine state of the site as it survives from the time of Homer. And how it will irreversibly eradicate the unique cultural asset that attracts thousands of visitors who marvel at the setting as described in that greatest epic of all times, where its hero Ulysses was shored up and dallied in trance as much by the beauty of the place, as by that of the goddess”.

Saturday’s vigil is being organised by the Ramblers' Association, in collaboration with Flimkien ghal Ambjuent Ahjar, Din l-Art Helwa and other environmental NGOs with the full collaboration of the Xaghra Local Council and the Xewkija Local Council.

All those who have at heart the cultural and natural heritage of Gozo are invited to attend, a statement by the NGOs said.
